She wanted to surrender the dog because she was peeing everywhere. Staff suggested she bring Polly to a veterinarian, so she left in a huff. She tied Polly to a post outside the building instead. Abandoned Pet Rescue staff and volunteers did what they have always done. Polly got medical care, including a diabetes diagnosis and insulin, toys to play with, volunteers to walk her and a safe place to sleep. Eventually, she dropped all the excess weight. Polly was never adopted and spent the rest of her days in the shelter’s front office. “She sort of became our mascot,” said Hansen, the shelter’s treasurer and board member. Polly’s story isn’t sad. It’s part of Abandoned Pet Rescue’s mission as the only no-kill shelter in Fort Lauderdale. On the other, shrubs, marsh grasses and tree islands stretch out toward the vast field. Tigertail, 36, who captains airboat tours through the Everglades, is navigating his boat through the only route available given how dry the park has gotten this year. This is the driest he’s seen the Everglades in a decade and the first time since the family business opened about 30 years ago that this canal is the only viable route. But if he doesn’t take his boat down the canal, Tigertail Airboat Tours would be forced to shut down like some of the other airboat operators that line the road. The Herald spoke with half a dozen operators. At his State of the City address last month, Mayor Steven Meiner revealed that an overnight census in January had identified just 93 homeless people in Miami Beach — the city’s lowest figure since the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust began conducting counts in 1997. As one firm wrote a decade into the building boom: “We note that this area of Sunny Isles has had several tower structures settle significantly more than predicted.” At least a handful of towers have sunk as much as two to three times more than expected, the Miami Herald found in a months-long analysis of dozens of engineering reports covering nearly every building along the city’s multibillion-dollar skyline. Two South Florida governments think they have a new solution — light it on fire, but in a planet-friendly way. Miami-Dade County and Coral Gables, one of the richest cities in the region, are both turning to new technology that leans on ancient farming practices to transform wood waste into a charcoal-like material called biochar. The material known as “black carbon” has the potential to clean dirty water, nourish soil and even be used in roads. Plus, it has lower emissions than a simple bonfire, leading to cleaner, healthier air that contributes less to climate change. “We need to evolve. He tilted it toward the sun, revealing the sunset colors inside — a Florida queen conch. Delgado, a research associate with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was leading a mission to find and relocate the iconic animal to greener — and cooler — pastures, where they might stand a better chance of mating. After a one-two punch from nasty hurricanes, Irma in 2017 and Ian in 2022, the Florida population of the mollusk took a nosedive. In 2017, before the hurricane, scientists estimated there were about 700,000 adult conch along the Florida reef tract. In the most recent survey, in 2022, that number dropped to 126,000. Numbers like that spell out one thing to scientists like Delgado. This population needs to make more babies, ASAP. At least, if the namesake of the independent island community of the Florida Keys — the Conch Republic — is not just a slogan for flags and bumper stickers.
